Designed in collaboration with Groupe Touchette, the new Continental tire features a tread design and stud technology for improved grip on ice and handling on snowy roads.

MONTREAL — Continental A.G. has designed a winter tire, the IceContact XTRM, for exclusive distribution through Canadian wholesaler Groupe Touchette Inc.

Designed in collaboration with Groupe Touchette, the tire features a tread design and stud technology for improved grip on ice and handling on snowy roads.

"The IceContact XTRM will significantly contribute to Groupe Touchette's positioning as a leader in the winter products category in Canada," Group Touchette COO Frédéric Bouthillier said.

"This collaboration with Continental has enabled us to actively participate in the design of this exclusive tire. By joining forces with German engineering that pushes the limits of winter tire technology, we can offer a product designed for Canada that makes no compromises on quality and brings distinctive value to the consumer."

The IceContact XTRM is offered with or without studs, is winter certified (three-peak mountain/snowflake emblem), and its direction profile structure is designed for variable winter conditions. Predominant main lateral grooves allow for better traction in the snow and enhanced slush evacuation, the company said. The tire features a highly structured design with nine side elements and numerous grooves.

The TriStar studs, produced by Tikka Spikes Oy in Finland exclusively for Continental, offer improved grip on ice (in all directions) compared with standard round studs, the company said.

The 11mm studs are made of lightweight aluminum and feature Stud Retention Technology with a coating that allows for 5% more grip on ice. The stud head promotes improved lateral grip on ice compared with directional studs and helps reduce road wear, according to the company.

Targeting a wide range of vehicles, such as full-size compact cars, crossovers, SUVs and pickup trucks, the IceContact XTRM will be available in winter 2020 in 46 sizes for rim diameters of 15 to 22 inches, with 45 additional sizes available in 2021.

Montreal-based Groupe Touchette operates more than 30 distribution centers across Canada. The company operates a number of banners, including: TireLink, DT Tire, Atlas Tire Wholesale, Tireland/IciPneu, TirePartners/Pneu Solutions, Touchette pneus mécanique and Touchette Motorsport.
