NEW YORK — Max Finkelstein Inc., the wholesale tire distributor that has been family owned and operated for four generations, celebrated its 100th anniversary recently with Goodyear Chairman, CEO and President Richard Kramer delivering a keynote address.

Vendors, customers, family members and employees attended a gala, replete with 1920s-themed music and dancing, June 29 at the Ziegfeld Ballroom in New York City.

Mr. Kramer presented Harold and Jerry Finkelstein — sons of company co-founder Irving Finkelstein — with Lifetime Achievement Awards for their dedication to the industry and 96-year business partnership with Akron-based Goodyear.

Max Finkelstein, his brother Irving and Lloyd Giardino began the company in 1919, almost by accident. They initially sold used tires along their scrap metal for nickels and dimes, then when their inventory went low, they began to sell new tires.

In the 1990s, Harold and Jerry Finkelstein expanded the business into a multi-location wholesale distributor with facilities in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Historical company photos and video presentations were shown throughout the evening, and the company said attendees were immersed in the foundation, traditions, and values that have made Astoria, N.Y.-based Max Finkelstein a success.

Other speakers included Max Finkelstein CEO and President Ira Silver; Ronald Finkelstein; Harold Finkelstein; Jerry Finkelstein; and Brian Finkelstein.

During the festivities, Mr. Silver recognized 24 team members in attendance for their 25 to 64 years of dedication and service to the company.

Attendees received a commemorative book, written by Harold Finkelstein's granddaughter, Melanie Paticoff Grossman, detailing the culture, philosophy and story of the business, past through present.

Max Finkelstein operates 16 distribution centers throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, distributing consumer and commercial products from manufacturers including Goodyear, Bridgestone, Pirelli, Kumho, Falken and Kenda.
