Some 2008 Honda CR-V SUVs may produce an abnormal whine from the engine when the outside temperature is below 50 degrees. One likely cause for the noise, Honda said, is excess gear clearances in the oil pump. Replacing the pump with an updated unit should eliminate further trouble.
Before ordering the new pump, however, verify the whining noise is indeed coming from the engine. To do that, shut the engine down, remove the serpentine belt and restart the engine. If the noise goes away, the problem isn't with the oil pump. Check out the drive belt and accessory pulleys for damage or wear. If the whining noise remains after the belt is removed, go ahead and replace the oil pump and bolts. Here the list of parts you'll need to complete the fix:
