BETHESDA, Md. — The Auto Care Association's (ACA) Import Vehicle Community is offering an on-demand webinar explaining how new sulfur dioxide regulations from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will change ocean shipping for importers of vehicles and vehicle parts.
Effective Jan. 1, 2019, the IMO will implement a mandatory requirement to reduce worldwide sulfur dioxide emissions by 85%, the ACA said.
"Starting in the fourth quarter of 2020, importers will experience higher costs per container and a shortage of available ships and container space," it said.
"Spot rates are expected to increase until the transition is complete."
The webinar was recorded Sept. 26 and featured experts in the ocean shipping industry from HCS International Gemini Shippers Association and Seabury Maritime.
Existing autocare.org account holders may sign into the webinar by clicking the "Sign In" link at the top right-hand corner of the Auto Care Digital Hub page. Non-account holders may create a free autocare.org account to access the webinar, the ACA said.
The association also has made available a white paper on the IMO 2020 regulations prepared by Seabury Maritime and the Gemini Shippers Group.
