LAS VEGAS — Electric vehicles (EVs) are coming — and automotive service shops can either be early adopters or stay on the sidelines.
It is only a matter of time before an EV pulls into an aftermarket shop bay for maintenance work, so there are some safety precautions shops need to take with these high-voltage machines.
EV service was the topic of several seminars at the recent AAPEX 2024 in Las Vegas during which speakers urged shop owners to train employees and invest in equipment.
Fortunately, EVs require many of the same maintenance services as internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, such as tires, brakes and steering and suspension.
Many shops have already been servicing hybrid vehicles, so they are on track to transition to also working on EVs, seminar speakers said.
"We have had hybrids now for over 20 years and we've had battery electric vehicles for going on 15. They are not impossible to figure out," said Brittany Kearns, project manager for EV service concept at Bosch Mobility.
"Training programs are really going to be the key to helping technicians and shop owners and workshops feel more approachable, feel more confident working on these vehicles," she said.
Kearns said Bosch's internal projections predict battery electric vehicles will achieve a 9% market share in North America by 2030, up from the current 2%, with hybrids making up 4%. She noted that many OEMs are rethinking their EV strategies and moving more towards the production of hybrids and plug-in hybrid models for the near future as EV sales have plateaued this year.
"First take and invest your time and your effort into quality training programs. And the training programs are going to be what helps bridge that gap and make these vehicles and these systems more approachable, more transparent, and give you that clear next steps that you can work on these and future-proof your shop," she said.
Shops need to learn about PPE (personal protection equipment) for working on or near the high-voltage batteries, what employers are going to be responsible for providing their techs, and lockout/tagout procedures for securing the EV service area.
