CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The community of Chapel Hill will be celebrating the 70th anniversaries of Chapel Hill Tire and the 97.9 The Hill WCHL radio station on Aug. 26.
The "Tires & Tunes: 70th Birthday Bash! A Chapel Hill Celebration at Midway'' will be held on North Graham Street and will feature local bands, car displays and food offered by local establishments.
Chapel Hill Tire's Franklin Street location will offer a 70th Anniversary $70 car wash and detailing deal. Other nearby local businesses are expected to offer in-store activities and special sales.
Event attendees will be invited to sing "Happy Birthday" with city officials, dealership executives and radio personalities.
"Chapel Hill Tire is grateful to have served Chapel Hill and the Triangle for 70 years. We are thrilled to share this milestone with our friends at 97.9 The Hill WCHL," Chapel Hill Tire President Marc Pons said.
The tire dealership was founded in 1953 by Sion Jennings, who sold the business to Al Pons in 1964.
Pons' children, Marc Pons, Britt Pons and Neill Bellamy, represent the second generation of family ownership.
Chapel Hill Tire has grown to 11 locations serving the Triangle area, Raleigh, Apex and Durham markets, including one in Cary, N.C., that it acquired late last year from Bull Tire& Service.
Chapel Hill Tire became the area's first hybrid-certified independent auto repair facility in 2011 and this year began offering mobile car wash and detailing.
