NAPLES, Fla. — John Sieff, longtime owner of S&M Tire Co. in Minneapolis, died Aug. 11 in Naples. He was 96.
Sieff graduated from Cornell College in 1950 and was president of S&M Tire Co. from 1970 to 1995.
S&M Tire was founded by his father Phil in 1921, and the company went on to found both the Remington and Star brands in the 1930s.
In addition to working in his family's business, Sieff became one of the founders of the Summit Tire Group and was its president for several years, working with manufacturers in Asia to produce private-label tires.
Sieff was inducted into the Tire Industry Hall of Fame in 2005, following his father, who was inducted in 1988.
Preceded in death by his parents Phil and Min Sieff, wife Jane, sister Shirley Johnson and great-grandson Owen Burton, he is survived by sons Philip (Laurie) and Peter (Delphine); daughters Christy (Richard), Lisa and Martha (David); 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and longtime companion Nancy Healy.
