SANTA ANA, Calif. — Yokohama Tire Corp. (YTC) has developed a 19.5-inch commercial drive-axle tire, the 720R, designed for use in regional and last-mile delivery operations.
The N speed-rated tire launches in one size, 225/70R19.5, and is engineered for use on heavy-duty pickup trucks and for last-mile delivery operations. YTC said it might consider other sizes latet, but stressed that this size is the most popular for this type of application.
"The 720R is designed for fast-paced businesses," Tom Clauer, senior manager of commercial product planning, said. "Its deep-tread design is built to last and provides year-round traction for 'outstanding' maneuverability in urban environments."
Thanks to a new casing design, the tire offers high-speed capabilities and carries an N speed rating that allows for speeds up to 87 mph. It complements the company's 115R all-position tire.
Among the vehicles targeted are heavy-duty pickups like the Ford F450 and F550 or Ram 450 along with a range of commercial chassis, including package delivery trucks, YTC said.
The tire has wide lateral grooves that run diagonally across the center rib for improved wet and snow traction, YTC said, as well as deep open shoulder lug grooves that provide enhanced traction and fight irregular wear. Serpentine grooves are designed to evacuate water efficiently to provide confident wet traction throughout the life of the original tire.
The 18/32nds-inch original tread depth provides aggressive traction and longer wear without sacrificing fuel efficiency, Yokohama said.
The tire also has sidewall protection designed to reduce damage caused by curbing and scrubbing in typical urban operations. Funnel-shaped tread grooves prevent stones and debris from reaching the bottom of the groove where casing damage can occur.
