Yokohama introduces tire for high-efficiency straddle carriers

WAKEFIELD, Mass. — Yokohama Off-Highway Tires America Inc. has released its Yokohama RR42 IND-4 steel-belted radial in the 480/95R25 size, built for the new class of straddle carriers that are increasing container handling efficiency.

The tire size is capable for use of loads of up to 37,500 pounds at 15 mph and rated for speeds up to 21.7 mph.

The Yokohama RR42 features deep circumferential grooves to minimize vibration and reduce tread wear. Even after 80 percent of the compound has been worn, the grooves remain, maximizing tire life and performance, the tire maker said.

Between the circumferential grooves, smaller grooves dissipate heat, which allows the RR42 to operate at higher speeds. Multi-layered, steel-belted construction helps with heat dissipation and traction, and an extra-sturdy hexagonal bead adds strength and stability.

"Basically, the heat dissipation grooves add speed and the hexagonal bead allows longer hauls," Bruce Besancon, YOHT vice president — off-the-road sales of YOHTA, said. "Thousands of straddle carriers are running 24/7, constantly cycling on hot asphalt, so it's an extremely tough application on tires. And I think we'll see more of the new straddle carrier models that have gone to six tires rather than eight, which means you have fewer tires to carry the same load. That adds to the challenge.
