KOBE, Japan — Toyota Motor Corp. has spec'd a pair of Falken performance tires as OE on the 2021 Mirai, the car maker's second-generation hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle, which went on sale in North America in December.
The Mirai is a four-door, five-passenger rear-wheel-drive coupe that uses a hydrogen fuel cell to power its electric motor.
This latest model is capable of a range of nearly 530 miles, thanks to a 20% increase in hydrogen capacity and a 10% improvement in overall fuel stack efficiency, Toyota said. The car's electric motor generates 134 kilowatts, up from 113 kilowatts in the previous model.
Driving performance is enhanced by adopting a sportier rear-wheel drive layout as well as the use of larger tire size (20-inch rim diameter) compared with previous models.
Toyota has selected the Falken Azenis FK001 A/S all-season and the Azenis FK510 performance tires, both in size 245/45ZR20 103Y XL, as OE for the Mirai, according to Sumitomo Rubber Industries Ltd. (SRI), producer of the Falken brand.
Azenis FK001 all-season and Azenis FK510 performance tires enhance stability and maneuverability when driving at higher speeds thanks to an asymmetrical tread pattern as well as an updated profile design, SRI said.
When cornering, the tire distributes contact pressure more evenly throughout the surface of the tread, assisting the driver in handling the vehicle while helping to bring out the vehicle's full performance potential.
Toyota assembles the Mirai in Japan and exports it to the U.S., where it debuted recently with a manufacturer's suggested retail price starting at $58,550.
