Tire Business earns six awards in Press Club of Cleveland competition

CLEVELAND — The staff at Tire Business has won six awards, including two first-place honors, in the Press Club of Cleveland's All Ohio Excellence in Journalism contest.

The final results of the contest, which honors the best of Ohio's print, broadcast, digital media, freelance, trade and college journalism, were announced Aug. 7 during a virtual awards ceremony held via Zoom.

Tire Business competed in the Trade Publications category.

Tire Business editor Don Detore earned a first place award in the Features/Special Section Package category for his package of stories on the winner of the 2019 Tire Business Humanitarian Medal recipient, Warren Tire's Bob Kellogg. Mr. Kellogg was honored for his philanthropy in helping the needy of upstate New York.

The package also included a livestream, held at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas.

Special Projects Reporter Bruce Davis also won first place in the Trade Report category for his story, "Impact of import duties on Chinese truck tires in flux."

Mr. Davis recently completed his 40th year at Crain Communications Inc.

Mr. Detore also won a second place award in the Departments and Columns category, for two columns, one entitled "Going back to the future with Ziegler Tire," and "Pet peeve? Pet lover? What's best for a shop?"

Tire Business Managing Editor David Manley won a third place award in the Trends category for his story, "Goodyear finds traction with soybean oil."

Reporter Kathy McCarron also earned a third place award, for her story titled, "100 years and counting for Ziegler Tire; Family steadily grows dealership, staff."

In addition, Tire Business took third place in the category of Best Trade Publication in Ohio. Judges said the magazine has an "excellent emphasis on news" and called it "the definition of a trade publication."

Judges also noted that it was a "tough call" rating Tire Business and the second-place winner, Ignite magazine, a publication from the Northeast Ohio Medical University.

Messrs. Detore and Davis were among just 17 winners who were recently recognized in the annual Crain Communications Editorial Awards contest. Tire Business competed against similar-sized publications in the Vertical B competition.

Mr. Davis was recognized in the Best Use of Data category for the Global Tire Report, the publication's annual ranking of the top tire makers in the world, according to global sales. The 2020 Global Tire Report will be published in the Aug. 31 edition of Tire Business.

Mr. Detore also won a Crain award in the Best Package: Art, Multimedia & Writing category, for his package on Bob Kellogg of Warren Tire, the 2019 Tire Business Humanitarian Medal recipient.
