ROME, N.Y. — Pirelli Tire L.L.C. is recalling 2,023 original equipment and aftermarket P7 Cinturato tires, size 245/45R18 100 Y, as they are marked with the incorrect maximum inflation pressure.
As such, the run-flats may not meet the strength requirements for the state pressure, according to the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration (NHSTA), and may increase the risk of a crash.
The OE tires were installed on certain Mercedes-Benz E-Class passenger cars imported into the U.S. by Daimler, and included 422 tires installed on 211 vehicles. The replacement tires, which number around 1,600 were imported into the U.S. by Pirelli, NHSTA said.
The tires were manufactured between April 3, 2017 and Feb. 15, 2019.
The subject tires were marked incorrectly with a maximum permissible inflation pressure of 340 kPa, although the tires were engineered to withstand a higher maximum inflation pressure of 350 kPa and, according to NHSTA, should have been marked accordingly.
Should the tire structure be compromised, NHTSA said the operator may feel vibration or shuddering. As run-flat tires, however, they are designed to provide stability and control in the event of air loss.
The recalled tires will be replaced with 245/45R18 100 Y Cinturato P7 run-flat tires, which are marked with a maximum inflation pressure of 350 kPa.
Dealers will replace the tires free. Owner notification letters are to be mailed March 17. Owners may contact Pirelli customer service at 1-800-622-2390.
