TWS' Mitas grip 'n' ride 21L - 24 IND construction tire.

TIVOLI, Italy — Trelleborg Wheel Systems' Mitas brands has expanded its Grip 'n' Ride construction tire range with the debut of new tire for the construction industry — for wheeled and backhoe loaders — that will serve the North American market.

The new new 21L - 24 IND tire is designed for improved performance on softer terrain and features strengthened sidewalls for greater durability when handling increased load capacity, as well as a tread pattern that delivers increased grip and self-cleaning properties, according to Trelleborg.

The new Grip'n'Ride construction tire is larger than the existing 19.5L — 24 IND tire and delivers almost 2,200 pounds greater load capacity when stationary, and 880 pounds greater load capacity at a speed of 40 kilometers per hour. Trelleborg said both Grip'n'Ride tires have a reduced height to width ratio and corresponding profile number, compared to competitors.

Marcello Mantovani, product manager for construction tires at TWS, said the production initially will service North America and its high demand "due to the high number of backhoe loaders in use, which require wider tires and greater load capacities. Shortly thereafter, we will roll out the new 21L – 24 IND tire for customers globally."

Backhoe loaders have a front shovel for earth moving and a hydraulic arm with a backhoe in the rear, TWS said, making them universal machines on several construction sites, especially road and path construction.

Yokohama Rubber Co. Ltd. (YRC)'s $2.3 billion acquisition of TWS is expected to close before year-end.
