HALIFAX, Nova Scotia — The Nova Scotia Labour Department is investigating the death of an employee at a Group Michelin tire production facility in the province.
The incident happened May 11 at the company's plant in Waterville, one of three it operates in Nova Scotia.
In a statement issued May 15, the department said a stop-work order was issued for the equipment involved in the incident.
Multiple local news reports indicate a man became entangled by a piece of machinery and was freed but later died in the hospital.
The name of the victim has not been released, and the department declined further comment as it is "an active investigation at this time."
Michelin confirmed the death to Tire Business in a May 16 statement.
"We are extremely saddened that we have lost a member of our Michelin family," Andrew Mutch, president, Michelin North America (Canada) Inc., said. "On behalf of the company, we offer our deepest sympathies to our colleague's family and friends, and to our Michelin Waterville employees.
"The safety of our employees is our number one priority, and we are working to understand the circumstances around this event."
