GREENVILLE, S.C. — Michelin North America Inc. has launched the Defender 2 tire for crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) and passenger vehicles, featuring an 80,000-mile treadwear warranty and an expansion of the size range into 19- and 20-inch rim diameters.

The Defender 2 tire is designed to handle the extra weight and torque of small SUVs, minivans and electric vehicles, Michelin said.

"As the market evolves toward electrification and small SUVs, we continue to strengthen our leadership in longevity and performance," Pierluigi Cumo, senior director of Michelin brand and retail marketing, said.

"Throughout our testing, the Defender 2 easily beat several leading competitors in tread life. With significant market coverage in sizing, the Defender 2 will be a welcome addition for dealers and consumers."

When tested for wet and dry on-vehicle braking, the Defender 2 tire demonstrated stopping distances better than or comparable to three leading competitive tires, Michelin said.

The tire also outlasted three competitors' tires by more than 25,000 miles on a treadwear test, delivering two extra years of treadlife, Michelin claims.

The tire features Michelin's full-depth 3-D SipeLock Technology to provide improved grip in slippery conditions and PIANO acoustic tuning, which reduces vibrations caused by the road resulting in a reduction of interior noise, the company said, adding that the Defender 2 tire is designed for smooth, even wear so the last mile is as quiet as the first mile.

The tire launches in 47 sizes, covering more than 60% of the targeted market through 2023, with every size holding an H speed rating. The size range starts at 205/55R16 and runs through 245/50R22. Pricing starts at $158.99, according to information posted on Michelinman.com.

The new line is an outgrowth of and complements the Defender passenger tire line, launched in 2012 and relunched in 2017 with an H speed rating.
