WASHINGTON — The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) has instituted a safety training program, "Hazard Recognition in Shipping/Receiving and Loading Dock Areas."
The program is funded in part by a $160,000 Susan Harwood Training Grant from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the institute said.
The hazard-recognition course is designed for recyclers across all materials who want their employees to learn about mitigating potential hazards, ISRI said. This includes:
- How to recognize hazards around mobile equipment;
- An understanding of the importance of controlling hazardous energy;
- Good housekeeping practices;
- Safe stacking of materials; and
- Fire safety and prevention strategies.
The free program emphasizes that safety is a core value for ISRI, according to Scott Wiggins, ISRI vice president of environmental health and safety.
"This program is unique in that it is designed specifically for the recycling industry," Mr. Wiggins said.
"Every company in this industry, including those who are not ISRI members, should take advantage of this training."
Each class is approximately four hours long, and they will be scheduled beginning in January.
