AKRON — Goodyear is recalling 76 Kelly Armorsteel KDM I truck tires, size 11R22.5, because the tire identification number (TIN) on the sidewall does not meet required minimum height specifications and is considered illegible.
The recalled tires were cured in mid-August 2019 at the company's plant in Topeka, Kansas, in a mold that was fitted with a date-code stencil engraved to less than the specified minimum of 0.51mm (0.020th inch), according to the recall notice issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Tires being recalled are marked with the TIN of MJ 3T K2BW 3419. An illegible date code on the tire may prevent drivers from determining the age of the tire, potentially resulting in prolonged usage, NHTSA said, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.
As such, NHTSA said these tires fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 119, "New Pneumatic Tires Other Than Passenger Cars."
Goodyear cited a malfunctioning CNC milling machine resulted in one TIN date code stencil being engraved to a depth less than the required minimum.
Goodyear had sought a ruling of "inconsequential non-consequence" from NHTSA in November 2019, but the agency denied the request June 16, 2022, resulting in the recall notice.
Dealers will replace the tires, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed no later than July 15. Owners can call Goodyear's customer service at 800-592-3267 for more information.
