FORT MILL, S.C. — Continental Tire the Americas has upgraded its lineup of General-brand medium/heavy truck tires with new regional on-/off-road, all-position products called General Grabber OA 2 and OA 2 Wide Base (WB).

These second-generation Grabber OA tires have a new tread compound for improved mileage, chip and chunk resistance and to protect the casing to allow for multiple retreads.

The new models, which provide enhanced traction, minimal stone retention, and durability, will replace the Grabber OA and OA WB in the lineup.

These heavy-duty tires are targeted at customers in industries such as construction, materials transport, cement, utility, heavy haul, special loads, mining/quarry or emergency vehicles, Conti said

"Drivers should expect a reduction of road noise and improved comfort with the new tread design and tread compound. Fleets should experience better fuel economy with better rolling resistance," Helmut Keller, head of product management, said.

The Grabber OA 2 all-position tire features 22/32nds- and 24/32nds-inch tread depth (depending on size) and a sidewall profile with curb rib to reduce damage from curbing, cuts and abrasions, Conti said. Patented groove technology leads to minimum stone retention through a stone-ejection system and extends casing life.

The casing features four steel belts and a closed-shoulder four-rib tread design that allows versatility in all wheel positions. Drivers should see improvements of up to 19% in mileage and up to 5% in chip-and-chunk resistance compared with the predecessor model.

Conti also offers the tire with a sensor that connects many of Continental's tire-pressure-monitoring systems, including ContiConnect Live and ContiConnect Yard Reader to read tire pressure and temperature.

Typical applications for the Grabber OA2 include coal/waste hauling, logging, construction, school buses and on-/off-highway fleets. The tire carries a three-retread/six-year warranty.

The tire launches in six sizes in "H" and "L" load ranges:

    • 11R22.5 – H
    • 11R24.5 – H
    • 315/80R22.5 – L
    • 385/65R22.5 – L
    • 425/65R22.5 – L
    • 445/65R22.5 – L

The Grabber OA 2 WB features 21/32nds, 23/32nds- and 24/32nds-inch tread depth (depending on size) and an "aggressive" multi-service all-position tread pattern for consistent traction.

The thick undertread resists casing penetrations and damage allowing for multiple retreads. Drivers should see up to 21% mileage improvement over the predecessor model.

Among vocations Conti considers ideal for these tires are construction, refuse haulers and heavy equipment fleets.

"We still wanted to offer the General Grabber OA 2 in wide base because many of our heavy-haul fleets are looking to increase their carrying capacity while being more efficient with their resources."

The 445/65R22.5 WB can carry up to 12,800lbs/130PSI per tire, for example, Conti said.

The Grabber OA 2 WB also comes with the three retread/six-year warranty.

Three "L" load-range sizes are available initially:

    • 385/65R22.5 – L
    • 425/65R22.5 – L
    • 445/65R22.5 – L

    No pricing information was disclosed.
