Drivers of 2000 Dodge Dakotas and Ram trucks along with Jeep Wranglers and Cherokees (all with NV3500 or NV3550 five-speed manual transmissions) may come into your store complaining of difficulty when attempting to shift out of gear.
According to Chrysler, the problem is most obvious on a second-to-third upshift or a fifth-to-fourth downshift, although it can occur when shifting into or out of any gear. A worn shift shaft detent plunger is the likely cause of the shift complaints. Replacing the plunger and shift shaft plug with updated parts should eliminate further problems. For the detent plunger, order part # 05016233AA for NV3500 transmissions or part # 05015949AA for the NV3550 gearbox. The shift shaft plug is the same for both units, and it goes by part # 04741128.
