Continental's new products are a pair of “Generation 5” truck tires — the HDR5 drive-axle tire (left), HSR5 regional all-position tire and a dedicated cold-weather tire, the Scandinavia HD3.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Continental Tire the Americas is upgrading its truck tire portfolio with a trio of new tires designed for North American conditions that are scheduled to hit the market later this year.

The new products are a pair of "Generation 5" truck tires — the HSR5 regional all-position and HDR5 drive-axle tires — and a dedicated cold-weather tire, the Scandinavia HD3. Conti is previewing the new products for customers at the 2023 Technology & Maintenance Council conference and trade show in Orlando.

The HSR 5 and HDR 5 both carry the industry's Three Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) certification, are sensor-ready and can be retreaded. They are replacing the Conti Hybrid HS3 and Hybrid HD3 tires in Conti's portfolio.

Conti said the products are designed for the original equipment and replacement market for fleets that want to optimize their total cost of ownership operation in regional applications. They were developed over the past few years at R&D centers in Hannover, Germany, and Uvalde, Texas.

The HSR 5 exhibits handling characteristics developed for class 4 and 5 trucks and are built with tread compounds designed to deliver reduced rolling resistance and increased durability. Full-width siping provides traction and improved handling throughout the life of the tire, Conti said.

The tire is available in size 225/70R19.5 load range G, at 16/32nds-inch tread depth.

The HDR 5 incorporates 3D matrix siping for improved traction and tire wear, open-shoulder grooves for enhanced traction without compromising tread life, and tread compounds that help reduce rolling resistance and enhance durability. The tire is available in tire size 225/70R19.5, load range G, at 16/32nds-inch tread depth.

Some of the Generation 5 tires will have RFID capabilities, enabling a fleet to know the make/model, serial number, unique identification number and size of the tire, an option that will help fleets improve tire asset management and track the total life cycle of the tire.

"Our Continental Generation 5 tires set a new bar in performance for our customers," Shaun Uys, head of U.S. Market Truck Tires Replacement, said.

"When a tire is enabled with Continental digital technology such as Gen II sensor and RFID tag, the tire becomes an object for life with complete tracking for maintenance, retreading and transparency for fleet managers."

Ford Motor Co. has selected the 19.5-inch sizes of the HSR 5 and HDR 5 as OE fitments for the 2023 Ford F450 and F550 medium-duty trucks.

The Scandinavia HD3 is a regional drive tire for use in extreme weather conditions, Conti said, with 3PMSF certification and a directional M+S tread pattern designed to deliver even wear and traction in snow or mud and all-season compounding for year-round performance.

The tire is engineered with multiple sipe technologies including 3D siping to provide traction during winter weather conditions throughout the life of the tire. It will be available in the second quarter in 11R22.5 and 11R24.5 sizes, load range H and 27/32nds-inch tread depth.

The tires' 3G casing is built with high-tensile-strength steel belts capable of supporting multiple retreads and includes a fourth belt for enhanced retreadability. The tire can be sensor ready and can have RFID capabilities.

A matching retread, the ContiTread Scandinavia HD3, is available now for a complete cradle-to-grave tire offering.

Conti offers a limited warranty adjustment policy that includes coverage against defects in workmanship and materials for seven years or three retreads from the date of manufacture when retreaded by an authorized dealer.

    Pricing information was not disclosed.
