BRUSSELS — Bridgestone Corp. announced Feb. 14 that it is offering its support to victims of the Feb. 6 earthquake that struck south-central Turkey and western Syria, expressing in a statement "its deepest sympathy to all the people affected by the earthquake ... and wishes for a speedy and full recovery for the people and communities."
The tire maker said it will donate $1.07 million through the Red Cross and a local foundation to support relief and rebuilding efforts for the people and areas impacted.
Brisa, a joint venture of Bridgestone Corp. and Sabanci Holding and Turkey's tire industry leader, has already provided needed supplies to the affected areas, Bridgestone said.
The donation is in line with Bridgestone's E8 commitment, a series of eight corporate values and initiatives beginning with the letter E.
The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., and its employee-backed YOKOHAMA Magokoro Fund announced Feb. 10 that it would donate a combined ¥1 million ($7,513) through the Japanese Red Cross Society to support relief efforts.
The 7.8-magnitude earthquake has a death toll of more than 40,000 people as of Feb. 14.
