SANTA ANA, Calif. — Yokohama Tire Corp. (YTC) has upgraded its Avid Ascend line of touring tires for passenger cars, crossovers and minivans with an LX-designated version that offers longer treadlife and improved all-season performance.
YTC is backing the LX with an 85,000-mile limited treadwear warranty, available on all 39 T-, H- and V-rated sizes.
The tire, produced at Yokohama's plant in Salem, Va., is designed for passenger cars, minivans and crossovers in sizes covering 15- to 18-inch rim diameters, starting at 185/60R15 and running to 235/45R18.
"The Ascend LX rounds out our Avid line and is the most complete touring tire available today," Bob Abram, Yokohama's senior manager of consumer product planning, said.
"It gives people what they want: Exceptional all-season traction and comfort backed by an amazing mileage warranty."
The Ascend LX features:
- Long tread life tied to Yokohama's "L-2" tread compound, featuring a distinct polymer blend that delivers wear resistance, and a wide, flat contour that provides a large footprint for even pressure distribution;
- Improved wet traction provided by four wide circumferential grooves, along with lateral grooves that help evacuate water and improve hydroplaning resistance;
- Winter traction provided by wavy 3D sipes on the shoulder and notches in the intermediate ribs to grip wintery roads; and
- A quieter ride due to an offset tread design staggered in a five-block sequence that helps reduce pattern and road noise.
The Ascend LX complements the the Ascend GT, an all-season "grand" touring tire launched in mid-2018 targeted at owners of luxury sports sedans and coupes as a replacement for the Avid ENVigor.
YTC noted that shipments of H- and V-rated touring tires are growing steadily while those for T-rated and below are falling. With the GT and LX, the company has two tires to attack this segment, each with a different focus — LX for mileage and GT for more balance between grip and mileage.
The two lines are priced similarly in the marketplace.
