HIALEACH, Fla. — Sentury Tire USA is adding a pair of SmartWay-verified commercial truck tires, Groundspeed GSFS01 and GSKS02, to its Groundspeed brand portfolio.
According to Sentury, the SmartWay Verification program provides a way for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to offset emissions produced by fleet vehicles in the U.S.
The SmartWay program, started in 2004, evaluates how lower-rolling-resistant tires help improve fuel economy for Class 8 tractor-trailers. The EPA's SmartWay Transport Partnership helps companies achieve freight supply-chain sustainability goals with tools, data and standards to measure and benchmark in order to improve environmental performance, Sentury said.
Maxwell Wee, executive vice president of Sentury Tire USA, said the company is excited to contribute to the SmartWay program.
"Our newly verified tires keep fleet vehicle owners competitive from a cost and emissions saving standpoint," he said.
A SmartWay Vision report issued by the EPA in 2020 estimated that its partners have saved 6 billion gallons of fuel, lowered fuel costs by $20.6 billion and reduced carbon emissions by more than 60 million metric tons since the program's inception in 2004.
"As e-commerce sales and freight transport emissions continue to grow, we predict that SmartWay-verified tires will continue to be industry standard," Wee said.
"Sentury will prioritize designing select class 8 tractor-tires to meet these standards and consequently be adding more to the lineup."
The Groundspeed GSFS01 comes in five sizes, with three fitting rim diameters of 22.5 inches and the other two fitting rim diameters of 24.5 inches.
Sentury said the tire was engineered specifically to reduce damage to the entire surface of the tire. It features a tread compound that reduces friction heat build-up, achieving performance balance between high wear and low rolling resistance, Sentury said.
The tire has rounded shoulder and the shoulder lug grooves promote longer life and even wear. The tire maker said the wide rib improves stability, resisting cracking and uneven wear. Its straight grooves drain water and facilitate wet braking and traction performance, promote even tread wear and reduce rolling resistance.
Meanwhile, the GSKS02 debuts in four sizes, two for 22.5-inch rim diameters and two for 24,5-inch rim diameters.
This product, Sentury said, features a scuff-resistant sidewall designed to limit damage in tight urban environments.
It is designed to bear heavy loads, the company said, and its wave groove design prevents stone entrapment. The tread pattern is designed with four wide straight grooves that drain water, facilitate wet braking and traction performance, promote even tread wear and reduce rolling resistance.
Sentury said sizes will be added to the portfolio in the future.
