WEST SUSSEX, England — Pirelli & C. S.p.A. will use the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed to announce several innovations in tire technology and materials.
Pirelli will debut the Pirelli Cybe Tyre, a sensor-based system that will enable tires to "talk" to the vehicle stability control systems, including ABS, ESP, and traction control, providing better performance and safety.
It will be adopted for the first time by Italian hypercar, the Pagani Utopia.
Pirelli's P Zero Corsa, P Zero Trofeo RS and P Zero Winter are fitments that have been specifically developed for the Utopia and equipped with sensors embedded in the internal part of the tread pattern.
The sensors, which connect via Bluetooth to the control unit of vehicle's dynamic systems, supply information to the car that allows the vehicle to select the optimal driving mode to match the tires currently fitted to the car. It runs on software created and implement by Pirelli that works directly with the car's electronic "brain," Pirelli said.
When the car has winter tires, for example, the ABS will be alerted on how to reduce stopping distances. When the car is running with semi-slick tires, the car's stability and traction control will know that there is additional grip available.
