SEOUL, South Korea — Nexen Tire Corp. has created a virtual-reality (VR) design review system the company said will strengthen its digital design capabilities and allow for users to appreciate the scale of real tires in a virtual space.
Nexen Central Research Institute, located in Seoul's Magok district, created the system.
The tire maker said it is the first Korean tire company to use VR design reviews in this fashion. The technology will be used to improve product completeness and evaluate sensitivity by reviewing tread performance design, styling and sidewall patterns.
The technology is expected to reduce design development time and cost compared with a traditional mock-up, Nexen said, adding that it "intends to respond flexibly to the rapidly changing automobile industry paradigm and strengthen its global competitiveness through superior performance and quality."
Nexen is planning to hold a VR experience exhibition using using head-mounted display (HMD) equipment, which will allow users to experience products and the company's history and design philosophy through the VR design simulation system.
Nexen recently agreed to work with Korea Expressway Corp.'s Transportation Research Institute. The company intends to strengthen its R&D capabilities and advance its market competitiveness with virtual tire performance evaluations using driving simulators.
