AKRON — Goodyear and Yokohama Rubber Co. Ltd. (YRC) have begun supplying dedicated "EV-ready" truck tires to commercial customers in the U.S. and Japan, respectively, for newly launched electric-powered buses and light trucks.
In the U.S., Goodyear is supplying its Urban Max BSAEV — which is designed to offer lower rolling resistance to help extend range while also providing enhanced traction increased load-carrying capacity — to Gillig L.L.C., a Livermore, Calif.-based producer of heavy-duty transit buses.
Goodyear said it designed this tire in partnership with Gillig, which is offering it as an optional fitment on low-floor versions of its Battery Electric range of buses designed for municipal fleets.
Gillig's Battery Electric range is equipped with additional battery packs for increased range, so Goodyear built the tire with a four-belt casing package that helps achieve an L load-range (10,200 pounds). The tire debuts in one size, 315/80R22.5.
Tom Lippello, senior director, commercial marketing, Goodyear North America, said the companies' "long-standing partnership" allowed them leverage their respective company's "talent and expertise … to develop an incredibly tough tire that could drive the next generation of Battery Electric buses."
Ben Grunat, vice president of product planning and strategy for Gillig, added: "The new … tire helps our zero-emission Battery Electric bus meet the needs of all our customers across the country, no matter the terrain, climate, or range requirements they face."
