WASHINGTON — Goodyear is recalling a few thousand Fortera HL crossover tires because of a potential tread-separation issue.

The recall affects 3,721 tires, size P255/65R18 109S, produced in mid-November 2019 at Goodyear's plant in Napanee, Ontario. The tires carry sidewall markings 4B XM ARDR followed by 4419 or 4519, indicating the 44th or 45th week of 2019.

Goodyear said certain tires may have been built incorrectly due to a tire machine malfunction that could result in out-of-specification belt widths, which could result in belt separation, a condition that could lead to loss of vehicle control potentially resulting in a crash.

Goodyear said it is not aware of any accidents, injury or property damage claims or warranty claims related to theses tires.

Goodyear will replace the tires, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin March 23. Owners of the tires may contact Goodyear customer service at 1-800-592-3267, or contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 or go to safercar.gov.

This the second recall of the Forteral HL in the past several years. In 2015 Goodyear recalled 48,512 of the tires, size P255/65R18, after it discovered cracking in the treads during routine tire endurance tests.

Goodyear launched the Fortera HL line in 2001, calling it a "cross between a passenger car and light truck tire." HL stands for "highway luxury."
