Goodyear announces Cooper Discoverer Stronghold AT tire

AKRON — Goodyear has added an all-terrain tire for light trucks, the Cooper-branded Discoverer Stronghold AT, to its portfolio of LT products.

The Discoverer Stronghold AT is designed for durability and performance on- and off-road, especially when towing and hauling heavy loads, Goodyear said.

"Built with durability in mind, it delivers the traction you need when it matters most, because tough jobs demand tough tires regardless of the terrain," the company said.

The Stronghold AT is built with 3D sipe technology in the shoulders to provide stability in cornering, and "wide open" grooves in the tread for traction in "soft" surfaces like sand or dirt.

The tire carries the tire industry's Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake designation (3PMS), indicating it meets a snow traction standard.

"The Cooper Discoverer Stronghold AT is built strong to help you harness your vehicle's full potential with a unique tread designed to resist cutting, cracking and tearing to help ensure you can get the job done every time," Jim Reese, Goodyear director of category, strategy and planning, said.

"This tire is just as tough as the predecessor, but with improvements in handling on dirt and gravel, improved treadwear and enhanced winter traction to meet you and your vehicle's needs."

The Cooper Discoverer Stronghold AT is available in 28 sizes, covering 16- to 20-inch rim diameters, compatible with a wide range of popular pickup trucks and off-road vehicles, including the Ram 2500/3500, GMC Sierra 2500/3500 HD, Chevy Silverado 2500/3500 HD, Ram ProMaster 3500, Ford F-250/350 Super Duty and the Jeep Gladiator Rubicon, Goodyear said.

The Cooper Discoverer Stronghold AT comes with a 60,000 mile limited treadwear warranty and a 45-day test drive guarantee. Pricing was not disclosed.

The Stronghold AT replaces the Cooper Discoverer AT3 LT and the Discoverer AT3 XLT, Goodyear said.

• Wide open grooves in the tread grab and release soft surfaces, while the narrower center grooves help to provide stability;
• Shoulder design includes scooped tread edges, wide tread grooves and a sidewall "hook" pattern to provide traction;
• Tread lugs help to resist cracking, tearing and rounding of the tread, Goodyear said. Ledges between the lugs help prevent stones getting stuck in the tread.

Goodyear said the tire performs well on wet surfaces thanks to its specialized rubber compound and wide lateral grooves. And it also features textured edges on the shoulders that "grab into" snow in harsh winter conditions.
