BOWIE, Md. — The Tire Industry Association (TIA) is pushing for more funding for infrastructure projects as well greater use of rubber-modified asphalt (RMA) and tire-derived aggregate (TDA) in parking lots and other projects.
TIA is making the push as part of the American Highway Users Alliance (AHUA).
The two organizations sent a letter on May 19 to the chairs and ranking members of the House and Senate Subcommittees on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations urging them to continue to include funding for highways and bridges in the fiscal year 2024 appropriations bill, at a higher level than what is included in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).
In its most recent Conditions and Performance Report, the U.S. Department of Transportation highlighted a $786.4 billion backlog investments for highways and bridges, TIA said.
"Given the impact inflation has had on the cost to construct highways and bridges, TIA believes increased investment in highways and bridges is critical," the organization said.
TIA also continues to advocate for extra funds for commercial motor vehicle parking as well as the use of RMA and TDA in parking and other infrastructure projects.
"RMA and TDA are both innovative and sustainable solutions that have been proven to enhance the performance and longevity of pavement surfaces, while also reducing waste and environmental impact," TIA said.
"TIA recognizes the importance of promoting sustainable practices and supporting the use of recycled materials in infrastructure projects," Roy Littlefield IV, TIA vice president of government affairs, said.
"The association strongly advocates for the widespread adoption of RMA and TDA and is committed to supporting initiatives and policies that promote the use of these sustainable technologies."
Littlefield IV noted the IIJA infrastructure package set aside $350 million for recycling purposes and said RMA and TDA should be considered as part of this funding.
The AHUA is a nonprofit 501(c)(6) advocacy organization serving as the united voice of the transportation community promoting safe, uncongested highways and enhanced freedom of mobility.
