Replacement market demand for both car and truck/bus tires was down by double digits in both the quarter and six months ended June 30, according to the latest figures from the European Tyre & Rubber Manufacturers' Association.

BRUSSELS — Replacement market demand for both car and truck/bus tires was down by double digits in both the quarter and six months ended June 30, according to the latest figures from the European Tyre & Rubber Manufacturers' Association (ETRMA).

The Brussels-based trade association cited "slowing demand combined with rising costs throughout the value-chain, widespread inflation, and concerns over the global economic situation" for the declines.

Based on the first-half performance, the ETRMA is projecting full-year declines, noting that consumers at the moment are "putting off replacements until the last moment."

The ETRMA has 14 tire-manufacturing companies among its members, whose corporate sales represent 70% of total global sales.

    Some key findings:

    • The replacement passenger car tire market fell 12.3% in the quarter to 49.5 million units, reflecting declines in all three categories: summer, all-season and winter tires.
    • For the first six months, shipments fell 12% to 104.2 million units, based on declines in both summer and winter tires.
    • Shipments of truck/bus tires plunged 27.8% in the quarter and 23% for the half year, to 2.57 million and 5.57 million units, respectively.
    • Agricultural tire segment shipments fell 33.6% in the quarter to 180,000 units, and 35.9% in the first half to 613,000 units.
    • Shipments of two-wheeler (motorcycle and scooter tires) tires fell 9.6% to 2.84 million units in the quarter and 5.6% for the half to 6.4 million units.

"We have now seen negative evolution in all categories since the end of 2022," ETRMA secretary general Adam McCarthy said.

Furthermore, McCarthy pointed to the impact of the continuing war in Ukraine, particularly on energy costs in the region. The situation contrasts the first half of 2022, which according to McCarthy was characterized by "very strong sales, boosted by stock rebuilds following the COVID-induced lockdowns."

The ETRMA has 14 tire-manufacturing companies among its members, whose corporate sales represent 70% of total global sales.

The ETRMA's data refer to markets in 35 European countries, stretching from Ireland in the West to Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and the Baltics in the East plus Malta and Turkey.
