MILAN — Pirelli & C. S.p.A. is halting production at plants in England, Italy and Romania in response to the global outbreak of COVID-19.
These moves, announced March 22, are in addition to Pirelli's decision to suspend production at its plant in Rome, Ga., through March 29.
Pirell is suspending production at plants in Settimo Torinese and Bollate, Italy; Slatina, Romania; and Burton on Trent and Carlisle, England. The company employs roughly 6,900 hourly workers at these plants.
Pirelli did not indicate how long the suspension would last in Italy, but said the move was in compliance with the Italian government's new provisions to beat the spread of the virus.
In Romania, the suspension will run March 23-31, and in England, production will be idled for an undisclosed duration, starting March 23. In the United Kingdom, Pirelli said it would will continue to supply clients from available stock.
The Milan-based company did not comment on the status of tire plants in Germany, Russia or South America.
