MIDLAND, Mich. — Dow has launched a platform called MobilityScience that tailors its technologies, products and services to the transportation sector.

The entity will encompass Dow's polyolefin, polyurethane, acrylic, specialty chemical and silicone technologies for electric vehicles, hybrids and internal combustion powertrains.

"Society is emerging from a global pandemic that reduced movement of people and goods to the bare essentials," MobilityScience growth director Tim Boven said in a July 1 statement. "We expect the transportation industry to recover with even more emphasis on sustainability. Dow's material science and innovation expertise are uniquely positioned to advance lower-carbon and digital solutions across transportation value chains."

The material-science platform is intended to address "mega-trends" in the automotive/mobility sectors. Customers should benefit from improved service, accelerated innovation, reduced complexity and more effective connection to Dow, the company said.

Key targets include meeting requirements for lighter weight, longer range, greater comfort, enhanced safety and lower carbon footprint, the company said.

Prior to the Dow spin-off from DowDuPont, the Dow Automotive business managed the segment strategy for the company.

"That business unit was dissolved upon separation, while the majority of transportation-related technologies remained," said Mike McCaffrey, Dow's commercial communications manager. "MobilityScience is a market platform created to own the segment strategy going forward across our businesses."

According to McCaffrey, all team members occupy roles currently within the reporting segments, now coordinating as one.

Dow has yet to set specific revenue targets for the overall MobilityScience platform, McCaffrey said.
