FINDLAY, Ohio – Daimler A.G. has selected a dedicated "LE" version of the Cooper Discoverer SRX premium all-season SUV/CUV tire as an OE fitment on the latest iteration of the Mercedes-Benz GLE five-door, five-passenger SUV.
The GLE has been redesigned for the 2020 model year and is available in both rear-wheel- and all-wheel-drive configurations. It's produced at Daimler's plant in Tuscaloosa, Ala., and will go on sale in the U.S. later this year at prices ranging from $53,700 (GLE 350) to $61,150 (GLE 450 4Matic).
Daimler has chosen two sizes — 255/50R19XL and 275/50R20 — for fitment on various trim levels of the GLE. Higher performance versions have tire specifications up to 22 inches in rim diameter, according to Mercedes.
The GLE 350 and 350 4-Matic are powered by a turbocharged 2-liter inline 4-cylinder while the 450 4-Matic gets a 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engine with "EQ" boost.
Cooper said the LE version of the SRX was engineered to meet the performance demands of GLE and differs from the standard SRX in tread pattern as well as materials and construction. It produces the Discoverer SRXLE at its plant in Tupelo, Miss.
Glenn Arbaugh, Cooper's executive director, global light vehicle OE business and strategy, said Mercedes' selection of the SRXLE for GLE "speaks volumes about our product quality and ability to meet the needs of even the most discerning customers."
The SRX debuted in May 2015.
Among the specific features of the SRXLE are "Micro-Gauge" siping and "Aqua Vac" channels — wide grooves in the tread that improve the tire's resistance to hydroplaning and provide more control and grip in heavy rain.
Cooper also said the tire's "leading-edge" tread technology delivers "superior" traction in all weather conditions while also offering improved fuel efficiency. The tire's profile shape yields a footprint that helps enhance vehicle control.
