GADSDEN, Ala. — Goodyear is planning to lay off an undisclosed number of employees at its car and light truck tire plant in Gadsden during the second quarter.
A company spokeswoman said Goodyear doesn't know at this time how many or what positions will be impacted, but it will "keep associates informed and share accurate information as soon as we can."
The facility, represented by United Steelworkers Local 12, employs about 1,600 and has a rated daily capacity of 25,000 units, according to data from Tire Business' 2018 Global Tire Report.
"The company continually adjusts schedules to maximize capacity at all plants, increase operational efficiencies and best serve our customers with the tires they need, when and where they need them," the spokeswoman said in a statement. "This move is part of that process."
The USW has not yet responded to requests for comment.
The 90-year-old plant is the company's oldest in North America.
