MINNEAPOLIS — For the second year running, TBC Corp. figures prominently in Franchise Times' Top 200+ ranking of franchise systems, holding down two of the top four spots in the automotive repair category with its Midas International and Big O Tires businesses.
Jiffy Lube International Inc. is No. 1 in the magazine's auto repair category with systemwide sales of $1.65 billion generated by 1,092 U.S. franchised stores, according to the Franchise Times ranking. That volume of sales puts Jiffy Lube 75th on the magazine's overall list.
Midas is a close No. 2 with systemwide sales of just shy of $1.5 billion, according to the magazine's estimate, while Big O Tires is No. 4 with estimated $735 million in sales.
Big O, Midas, Tuffy Tire & Auto Service, AAMCO and Precision Tune Auto Care were singled out as among the fastest-growing auto service-related franchise programs. The magazine pegged Big O's sales and unit growth at 7.48 and 13.1 percent, respectively.
Otherwise it was a bit of a down year for the automotive franchise business. Midas's growth was just 0.7 percent while Tuffy, Meineke, AAMCO and Precision Tune all suffered sales drops.
The leading oil change franchises, by contrast, recorded measurable growth --- Valvoline Instant Oil Change, up 14.7 percent; Express Oil Change, up 8 percent; and Jiffy Lube, up 1.9 percent.
The auto repair franchise systems in the ranking are:
