    Michelin's new tires, the Xtra Load Grip and Xtra Load Protect in size18.00R33, are the first-ever 33-inch models for this market segment with the industry's 3-star load rating.

    AKRON — Michelin North America Inc. and Yokohama Tire Corp. have introduced tires for rigid-frame dump-truck applications in 33- and 49-inch rim diameter configurations, respectively.

    Michelin's new tires, the Xtra Load Grip and Xtra Load Protect in size18.00R33, are the first-ever 33-inch models for this market segment with the industry's 3-star load rating. This, the firm said, will allow users to increase load capacity by up to 11 percent — or up to 12 tons, depending on application — or accommodate more distance per hour to maximize productivity.

    "Quarry managers demand continuity of operations," Jake Thompson, Michelin B2B North America mining marketing manager, said. "Rigid dump trucks are expected to move as much material as possible by moving faster or by carrying more load."

    Mr. Thompson said this "robust" tire provides a solution that maximizes productivity and output of the quarry while delivering traction, damage resistance and increased tire life.

    Michelin launched the upgraded Xtra Grip series in July 2017 in size 24.00R35, noting that the new models are designed for separate, distinct operating conditions — the Xtra Load Grip for soft, loose, muddy ground conditions and the Xtra Load Protect for hard, sharp, abrasive conditions on flat, dry surfaces.

    The tread of the Xtra Load Grip features 30-percent more biting lug edges for improved braking, cornering and accelerating, Michelin said. The tire is built to handle speeds up to 21 mph thanks to cooler internal running temperatures and can yield up to 5 percent longer wear life.

    The "revolutionary" tread pattern of the Xtra Load Protect provides better load distribution across the contact patch because of a higher volume of tread rubber, and offers improved heat dissipation thanks to interlocking tread blocks.

    Michelin claims the new tires can improve productivity — as measured in ton miles per hour — by 22 to 36 percent over previous-generation Michelin products.

    Yokohama's new product for this segment is the RL47A E-4 radial in size 27.00R49.

    The tire is designed to handle longer high-speed hauls and is offered in four compound options: CP (cut-protected), REG (regular), CP-S (special cut resistance) and HR (heat resistant).

    "The RL47A runs faster, cooler and longer," Bruce Besancon, YTC vice president of OTR sales, said. "It's engineered to help earthmovers get the job done faster and more efficiently, which will have positive impact on the bottom line."

    Benefits of the RL47A include:

    • Faster/longer hauls due to heat-dissipation grooves across the tread and thermal-reduction architecture on the shoulder blocks;
    • Longer service life and enhanced cut resistance due to a larger, flatter footprint that distributes weight more evenly.

    It carries the industry's 2-star load designation.
