Discount Tire opens 1,000th store

PHOENIX — Discount Tire/America's Tire has opened its 1,000th retail store, a facility in northern Phoenix, 58 years after founder Bruce Halle opened the dealership's first store in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The new store, which carries on the dealership's traditional exterior design, was built near the Happy Valley Town Center a few blocks east of I-17 and about 20 miles northwest of the firm's headquarters in Scottsdale, Ariz.

"Reaching 1,000 stores is truly a testament to Bruce Halle's dream and commitment to treating people right," Lisa Pedersen, assistant vice president, marketing, said.

" Bruce always said, 'Once we get to 1,000, let's go open the next thousand — as long as we stay true to who we are.'

"We will continue to responsibly grow and honor Bruce's legacy on which the company was built," she added. Mr. Halle died Jan. 4 at age 87.

Michael Zuieback, Mr. Halle's stepson, has been the dealership's CEO since 2015.

Discount Tire — which also does business as America's Tire in parts of California — operates stores in 34 states and has targeted Pennsylvania as the next state where it plans to open stores.

Some highlights of the dealership's growth are:

• 1960 — 1st store, in Ann Arbor, Mich.

• 1985 — 100th store opens in Colorado

• 1987 — Corporate headquarters moved to Scottsdale

• 1988 — 200th store opens, in Bellingham, Wash.

• 1994 — Discount Tire Direct begins operations

• 1996 — 300th store opens, in Countryside, Ill.

• 1999 — 400th store opens, either in Fenton, Mich., or Rosenberg, Texas (both opened the same day)

• 1999 — Exceeds $1 billion in revenue

• 2002 — 500th store opens, in Lansing, Mich.

• 2004 — First motorsports engagement with sponsorship of car in the NASCAR Busch Series

• 2005 — 600th store opens, in Acworth, Ga.

• 2008 — 700th store opens, in Waxahachie, Texas

• 2010 — Exceeds $3 billion in revenue

• 2011 — 800th store opens, in Rocklin, Calif.

• 2012 — Exceeds $4 billion in annual revenue

• 2014 — 900th store opens, in Cedar Falls, Iowa

• 2018 — 1,000th store opens, in Phoenix
