Some 2008-09 Saab 9-7X models with 4.2-liter engines may emit a ticking sound from the engine compartment. When you open the hood, take a close look at the exhaust manifold because there's a good chance there's a crack in it. The crack is what causes the ticking noise.
Installing a revised manifold with a stress-relieving slot machined between the two center runners — part No. 12637060 — will eliminate the noise. The updated manifold should be available at most General Motors dealers.
"Factory Fixes" is written by Jim DePalma, a 30-year veteran of the auto repair business who has served stints as a service manager, parts manager and ASE-certified technician. His column provides vehicle manufacturers' authentic factory technical service bulletins (TSBs) that have been condensed for easier reading.
