WASHINGTON — Scott Pruitt, administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from the beginning of the Trump administration, has resigned.
President Trump accepted Pruitt's resignation the afternoon of July 5.
Mr. Pruitt left office facing 13 separate ethical inquiries from various government offices and congressional committees regarding his spending in office and his alleged mismanagement of the EPA.
During his tenure, which began Feb. 17, 2017, Mr. Pruitt gained a reputation as a hard-line conservative activist, methodically rescinding or rolling back environmental regulations promulgated by the Obama and other previous administrations.
Mr. Pruitt came to the EPA after six years as Oklahoma attorney general. During his time in that position, Mr. Pruitt sued the EPA at least 14 times in opposition to its policies.
Deputy EPA Chief Andrew Wheeler is now the acting administrator, the administration said.
