HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — Sears Holdings Corp. has added 71 Sears Auto Centers — including 30 in California alone — to the list of stores that will offer installation and balancing for customers who purchase tires on Amazon.com.
That brings to 118 the number of Sears Auto Centers across the U.S. that will make the service available.
Sears began offering the full-service tire installation and balancing for Amazon.com customers on May 9 at 47 Sears Auto Centers in eight metropolitan areas. The service covers any brand of tire purchased. In addition, Sears said has begun selling its DieHard all-season passenger tires on Amazon.com.
This collaboration means Sears Auto became the first nationwide auto service center to offer Amazon.com customers a ship-to-store tire solution integrated into the Amazon.com checkout process.
"Amazon customer reviews have been very positive, and we are two months ahead of schedule," said Mike McCarthy, vice president and general manager of Sears Automotive. "Customers are taking advantage of additional services during the tire installation process, such as oil changes and alignments."
Mr. McCarthy said Sears is meeting "our 60-minute tire installation commitment, and more than 90 percent of the Amazon customers are new Sears Automotive customers."
Other states with stores added to the list include Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia and Washington.
Amazon customers can select their tires, the Sears Auto Center location and their preferred date and time for the tire installation. Sears Auto Centers then will contact them to confirm their appointment, the companies said.
Sears Auto Centers said its locations will provide installation and conduct a free multi-point performance snapshot on the vehicle.
Sears' standard $16.75 installation fee covers installation, balancing, either a rubber valve stem or a TPMS rebuild kit, disposal of old tires, One Stop Vehicle evaluation, under hood/under-car evaluation and road-safety test.
The installation fee is included in the price paid online, Amazon said.
For customers not close to a Sears location, Amazon offers other authorized installers, which provide an installation quote, during the purchase process. The customer is not obligated to accept the offer, however.
