TRELLEBORG, Sweden — Trelleborg Wheel Systems is consolidating production of farm and industrial wheels and rims to its plant in Liepaja, Latvia, a move that will result in the closing of a plant in Sävsjö, Sweden.
Trelleborg said it intends to consolidate "all its wheels and rims production in one facility" by year-end. It did not comment on the reasons for doing so, the financial implications of the move or the number of workers affected.
The plant in Liepaja will manufacture wheels and rims from 3 to 54 inches in rim diameter, used for everything from forklifts and farm equipment to harvesting machines for forestry, a company spokesperson said.
Aiming to become a "center of excellence" for wheels and rims production, the Liepaja facility will expand its floor space by more than 70 percent, Trelleborg said.
Trelleborg opened the Latvian plant in 2008 as an alternative for a plant in Hadsten, Denmark, that it was planning to close.
