GREENVILLE, S.C. — Michelin North America Inc. is taking time to recognize transportation industry workers who work "like busy elves" to ensure the holidays are merry for so many others.
For the third consecutive Christmas season, the tire maker is giving everyone the chance to spread cheer and offer messages of gratitude with its #KeepThanksMoving campaign on Facebook and Twitter.
"Making the holidays memorable takes a lot of people, a lot of energy and a lot of miles to get the food, presents, packages and people to their destinations." said Ralph Dimenna, chief operating officer for Michelin Americas Truck Tires division.
Everything from Christmas trees to the gifts wrapped beneath them rely on the transportation industry, Michelin said. This year, for instance, 15,000 tree farms will grow and harvest between 20 million and 30 million trees that are delivered to retailers and households throughout the U.S. and Canada for Christmas, the tire make said.
Postal service workers are busy, as well. Michelin noted that the 836 million pieces of mail are processed each day throughout the holiday season.
Then, there are those giving back, Michelin said, pointing to the efforts of more than 2,000 Meals on Wheels volunteers who will deliver meals to homebound individuals throughout the holiday season. Those volunteers, the tire maker added, also provide friendly smiles and can check-in on the adults who receive the service.
"Getting ready for the holidays is always a busy time, and so many transportation professionals are responsible for making the holidays special," Mr. Dimenna said. "Most of these people operate vehicles — and not sleighs — in order to get this important work done so that all of us can enjoy this festive time. Our hats are off to their dedication."
