NEW YORK — Popular Science magazine has selected Nokian Tyres P.L.C.'s Hakkapeliitta 9 winter tire as one of its "Best of What's New" products for 2017.
The magazine singled out the Hakkapeliitta 9 for its "adaptive stud" technology, which helps ensure traction in cornering, straight-line acceleration and braking. It's one of 10 products featured in the automotive category.
"The Best of What's New awards honor the innovations that shape the future," said Joe Brown, editor-in-chief. "From life-saving technology to incredible space engineering to gadgets that are just breath-takingly cool, this is the best of what's new."
The Best of What's New honors are awarded to 100 winners across 11 categories. Recipients of this award must have a product or technology representing a significant step forward in its category.
Winners will be featured in the November/December special issue.
The Hakkapeliitta 9 features an eco-friendly winter tread compound, which uses silica, canola oil for improved tear resistance, natural rubber and Nokian's proprietary "Green Elasto Proof" biomaterial that keeps the compound elastic at low temperatures.
