ATLANTA — Michelin Americas Truck Tires claims its newest drive-position tire, the XDA Energy +, is its most fuel-efficient truck tire ever, and is backing up the claim with a $400 limited guarantee per vehicle to users that don't experience the firm's fuel-savings expectations.
Michelin said the fuel savings are derived from an "innovative" FuelSaver compound formula optimized for ultra-low rolling resistance. The company did not elaborate on the technical details of what differentiates the new compound from previous ones.
The tire debuted at the recent North American Commercial Vehicle Show in Atlanta. It is available in the U.S. and Canada in size 275/80R22.5, load range G.
Michelin claims the new tire, a duel drive-position radial that replaces the XDA Energy, offers a rolling resistance reduction of as much as 7 percent vs. a "leading" competitor's product. Rolling resistance accounts for approximately 35 percent of a Class 8 truck's fuel costs, Michelin said.
The limited guarantee is available to fleets of any size. The terms of the deal state that Michelin will work with customers to benchmark their fuel economy using their current drive tire, then re-run the benchmark tests with the XDA Energy +.
If the savings don't measure up to the pre-establish parameters, Michelin will pay the guarantee, which amounts to the savings the tire maker claims users should experience, at an average fuel cost of $2.50 per gallon.
The tire is compliant with SmartWay and California Air Resources Board standards and is a "significant contributor" to Greenhouse Gas Phase II regulations, Michelin said.
"Helping fleets to increase their competitiveness in the market is our goal," said Adam Murphy, vice president of marketing for MATT. "One of the main levers fleets have to improve their competitiveness is improving their fuel efficiency, and tires like the new Michelin XDA Energy + can play a key role."
The XDA Energy + features wide circumferential grooves for efficient water evacuation and grooved, angled walls to help resist stone retention. The sidewall features TW6 OzoneShield technology for increased protection against weathering.
Michelin is offering a 7/7/3 manufacturer's limited casing guarantee, covering defects in workmanship and materials for 700,000 miles, seven years or three retreads from the date of manufacture when retreaded by an authorized Michelin Retread Technologies (MRT) dealer.
Michelin also debuted a low-profile line extension of its X Multi D regional drive tire, size 275/80R22.5, designed to lower overall truck height, improve clearance issues and help improve aerodynamics for fuel efficiency. The new size is targeted for use in less-than-truckload, pick-up and delivery, food and beverage and other demanding vocational segments.
The company said adding a low-profile size of this tire addresses a trend among regional fleets that are moving to low-profile tires to gain fuel economy and tire life advantages
