WASHINGTON — Two manufacturers of heavy trucks have filed petitions for decisions of inconsequential noncompliance from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) because of mismarked wheel rims.
Mack Trucks Inc. and Volvo Trucks North America filed separate petitions with NHTSA, stating that the markings on certain wheel rims from both companies are marked 24.5" x 8.25," instead of the correct 22.5" x 8.25."
The mismarked rims appear on 226 Model Year 2017 Mack Pinnacle, Granite, Terra Pro and LR heavy-duty trucks, manufactured between Aug. 15 and Dec. 12, 2016, and 862 Model Year 2017 Volvo VNL and VNM heavy-duty trucks manufactured between Aug. 15 and Nov. 10, 2016.
The tires mounted on the rims as original equipment are 22.5 inch, Volvo and Mack Trucks said, so technicians will replace those tires with tires of the same size. A 24.5-inch tire will not fit on the rims, so there is no chance they will be mounted on the rims by mistake, they said.
NHTSA published the notices about the Mack Trucks and Volvo petitions in the July 20 Federal Register. Both are available online.
