Grupo de proveedores quiere una reunión con Pence, Ross acerca del impuesto fronterizo, TLCAN

    MEMA dice que un impuesto de ajuste fronterizo podría disparar una “reacción en cadena”, aumentando los costos para los fabricantes al tiempo que disminuye el capital disponible, lo que podría resultar en un aumento de los precios a los consumidores, reducción de las ventas y, al final, la reducción de los empleos de manufactura que Presidente Donald Trump desea expandir.

    DETROIT, Michigan —Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA) quiere reunirse con el Vicepresidente de EE.UU. Mike Pence y el Secretario de Comercio Wilbur Ross para plantear las inquietudes de los cambios propuestos a los impuestos fronterizos y el Tratado de Libre Comercio de América del Norte (TLCAN).

    En una carta enviada el 1o de marzo, la asociación busca hablar sobre la reforma comercial y fiscal con el vicepresidente. MEMA se opone al impuesto de ajuste fronterizo, pero no está claro si el tema sería el enfoque de la conversación con el Sr. Pence.

     

    Resaltando el déficit comercial del país, la administración de Trump ha propuesto un impuesto fronterizo como una herramienta para alentar más empleos de manufactura en EE.UU. y desalentar la importación de mercancía manufacturada. El Sr. Trump ha acusado a Ford Motor Co., Toyota Motor Corp., General Motors Co. y BMW A.G. por los plantes de importar vehículos a EE.UU.

    El Sr. Trump también ha prometido renegociar el TLCAN, un pacto comercial entre Estados Unidos, México y Canadá, con términos más favorables para la generación de empleos en EE.UU.

    De acuerdo con MEMA, un impuesto de ajuste fronterizo podría disparar una “reacción en cadena”, aumentando los costos a los fabricantes al tiempo que disminuye el capital disponible, lo que pudiera terminar aumentando los precios a los consumidores, reduciendo las ventas y, al final, reducir los empleos de manufactura que el Sr. Trump desea expandir.

    En una carta del 28 de febrero dirigida al Sr. Ross, la asociación de proveedores automotrices advirtió que cualquier cambio al TLCAN no debe “arriesgar la desestabilización” de las cadenas de suministros, aumentar “radicalmente” los costos de producción ni reducir el capital disponible, lo que podría afectar el aumento de empleos.

    “Los empleos de manufactura en esta industria están aumentando rápidamente, subiendo casi 20 por ciento desde nuestro último informe [empleos e impacto económico] en 2012”, dijo Steve Handschuh, CEO de MEMA, en una declaración enviada a Automotive News. “Esto se debe en parte a una cadena de suministros integrada dentro del mercado norteamericano”.

     

    La asociación declaró en un comunicado de prensa que los proveedores estadounidenses importan y exportan piezas en todo el mercado norteamericano: Las piezas exportadas que cruzan la frontera a menudo se combinan con otras, para luego ser importadas de regreso a Estados Unidos para el ensamble final.

    Debido a que los proveedores automotrices proveen la mayor parte de los empleos de manufactura, dijo el Sr. Handschuh, beneficiaría a los funcionarios de la administración de Trump sentarse a hablar con la asociación.
