WIXOM, Mich.—Chinese automotive sensor producer Hamaton Automotive Technology Co. Ltd. has opened a North American headquarters in Wixom as a first step toward building business throughout the continent for its line of tire pressure monitoring systems.
The company also is opening a 340,000-sq.-ft. OE sensor plant in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, China, which houses the firm's research, development and testing center. The plant represents an investment of about $12 million.
"Opening a new headquarters in America is the next step in our journey, and plans to expand further in the future are already in the works," said Ian Smith, CEO of Hamaton Inc. in Wixom as well as of Hamaton Ltd. in Desford, England.
Hamaton has no OE business with North American vehicle makers, the company said, and thus is working to establish an aftermarket sales and distribution network for its products, which are marketed as OE replacement parts.
Hamaton did not offer sales expectations for its North American initiative.
The Wixom location will include warehousing and logistics, Hamaton said, as well as vehicle testing and evaluation. The company said it believes having a North American headquarters will lead to increased local market understanding and greater insight into customer needs.
Hamaton has hired Enri Osmani—who had previous stints with Alligator North America Inc. and ATEQ Corp.—as general manager for North America and Canada.
