Pomp's Tire buys Cross-Midwest

GREEN BAY, Wis. (Dec. 14, 2016) — Pomp's Tire Service Inc. has acquired Cross-Midwest Tire Co., a Kansas City, Kan.-based dealership with a dozen commercial locations throughout Illinois, Kansas and Missouri.

Cross-Midwest, founded in Kansas City in 1980, will be a division of Pomp's Tire but will continue to operate under the Cross-Midwest name, according to Pomp's Tire President Jim Wochinske.

Financial terms of the deal, concluded Nov. 30, were not disclosed.

According to Tire Business calculations, Pomp's Tire is considered the third largest commercial dealership in the U.S. with estimated commercial-related sales of $375 million in 2015. The addition of Cross-Midwest will push Green Bay-based Pomp's close to or even over the $500 million threshhold.

Cross-Midwest's territory ranges from Dupo, Ill. to Salina, Kan., a stretch of 430 miles. Cross-Midwest's territory does not overlap with Pomp's territory.

Pomp's operates 79 locations in eight states — Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin — and a dozen Bandag-system retread plants.

Cross-Midwest handles Continental-, Firestone-, General- and Yokohama-brand truck tires, according to its website, along with Bridgestone and Cooper brands in the passenger/light truck segment. It operates three Bandag-system retread plants.

Pomp's commercial brand selection includes Bridgestone, Continental, Dayton, Firestone, General, Gladiator, Goodyear, Hankook, Kelly, Michelin and Yokohama.

Both companies are part of the American Commercial Tire Network (ACTN).

Pomp's last major acquisition was in 2008, when the dealership bought six Petro's Tire Sales & Service stores in Indiana.
