WASHINGTON (Dec. 8, 2016) — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has granted Volkswagen Group of America Inc.'s petition for a decision of inconsequential noncompliance in the case of misprinted tire placards.
The placards in question are installed on approximately 325 VW Beetle convertibles, model year 2016, manufactured between June 18 and Nov. 9, 2015, VW told NHTSA.
The tire size on the placards does not match the size of the tires actually installed on the vehicles, VW said. The auto maker argued that the misprints would not adversely affect either tire performance or loading capability, NHTSA said in its Dec. 8 notice on the grant of inconsequential noncompliance.
Also, the loading and combined weight information is correct on the placards, VW said.
In granting the petition, NHTSA said the decision related only to those vehicles no longer under VW's control.
VW distributors and dealers still have the responsibility of withholding those vehicles from sale after the auto maker informed them of the error, the agency said.
