CONCORD, N.C. (Nov. 23, 2016) — Derek Sorenson, an auto technician at the Firestone Complete Auto Care location in Sacramento, Calif., has been named Bridgestone Retail Operation (BSRO)/Automotive Service Excellence Master/LI Automotive Technician of the Year.
ASE's Technician of the Year program recognizes the country's best technicians throughout the automotive service and repair industry. The award is given by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (NIASE), the non-profit that oversees the ASE certification program.
The ASE Master/L1 Automobile Technician of the Year award honors individual achievements, including top ASE test scores, on-the-job excellence and community service.
Mr. Sorenson, a 40-year industry veteran who works as a full-time technician, was honored during a Nov. 16 ceremony in Concord, where the NIASE recognized 45 other auto techs considered to be among the best in the industry.
“Derek is a ‘go-to' guy who's often called by other stores in his area for help with some of the more challenging jobs,” Damien Harmon, chief operating officer, Bridgestone Retail Operations said.
Mr. Harmon went on to note that it is Mr. Sorenson's commitment to the job and passion for his work impacts his co-workers, many of whom are among Mr. Sorenson's mentees.
“Not only is he an incredibly talented technician, he also serves as a mentor to many of his co-workers, helping them grow and develop their own skills,” Mr. Harmon said. “The combination of his passion, experience and commitment to doing great work makes him exceedingly qualified to receive this prestigious award.”
Outside of work, Mr. Sorsenson enjoys spending time with his family — his wife, six children and 15 grandchildren — and works to restore automobiles with his sons. He is active in giving back to the community, volunteering with several charitable organizations throughout the year, while also serving through his church.
Leesburg, Va.-based NIASE's mission is to improve the quality of automotive care through voluntary testing and certification of automotive technicians and parts specialists.
